Year 5
What have Year 5 been getting up to?

English  This term, we will be reading Way Home¸ continuing work on inference skills and understanding how to create mood and atmosphere through use of description.  We will also continue to teach reading and comprehension skills as a whole class and on a one to one basis and focus on grammar, punctuation and spellings.

Maths  This term we will build on our knowledge of fractions which they began to develop in Term 2.  We will then use this to support the steps in our learning as we discover decimals and percentages and converting between them.  In our regular maths skills checks, we will continue to work on mental arithmetic skills, multiplication and division as well as knowledge of shape and space.

History  ​There is no history focus this term.

Geography  This term, we will be learning map skills and creating observational maps of the school site which will eventually result in them making their own scale maps.  We will be looking at how cartography has changed over time and the various purposes behind map drawing.

Science  We will be using our core text, Way Home, to support our science learning this term. We will be learning about changes of state, working on a range of experiments to investigate how some solids can dissolve and form solutions.  We will also be looking at scientific data to support scientific reasoning and written scientific thinking.

Computing  Coding and programming using the ‘Switched on Computing’ scheme in addition to ongoing online safety learning.  We will link this to our maths learning as we will be learning about creating digital art work through the tessellation of shapes.

R.E  This term we are going to be developing our understanding if what it means for Christians to be ‘People of God’.  Not only will we learn about what this actually means, but how belonging to this body of faith might influence and motivate Christian behaviour.  We will use biblical passages a long side our own thoughts and experiences to support us in our learning of this.

P.S.H.E This term we will be developing our knowledge about diversity, the differences between facts and opinions and learning about our rights, responsibilities and duties.  This will link to our learning about our British Values and our school’s Christian values.

M.F.L  The children will be using the Euro Stars programme as well as games, songs, video clips and stories to learn and practise new vocabulary in lots of different ways to build their confidence in French.  Our unit for this term is En route pour l'école (On the way to school).

P.E  We will continue to swim this term.  Devon will swim on a Monday and Wiltshire and Sussex will swim on a Thursday. Alongside this, we will have class P.E. sessions. Please ensure that a full PE kit is in school every day as our timetable for PE lessons can vary on a weekly basis. Year 5 children will also participate in Forest School sessions during the term on Friday afternoons, these are led by a specialist forest school teacher.

Art and D.T This term, our focus will be on sewing as they children learn a variety of methods to stitching to create seams and decorative embellishments as they create bags.

Music  Children will work on a variety of musical skills. Alongside learning about the work of different composers in a range of genres, the children themselves will work on their compositions own, performing throughout the term, as well as learning technical musical vocabulary and skills.

On a Thursday...            

- Please sign and return your child’s Buster Book Club bookmark.

8 Spellings a week (5 statutory, 2 topic, 1 wizard word. Write definition of topic and wizard words. Additional challenge to write all spelling words correctly within a paragraph)
